76 road corridors on the upgrade

As many as 76 road corridors across the State are to be developed under the stimulus package by sourcing funds from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).

The works, estimated to cost from Rs.10 crore to Rs.56 crore, has got the administrative sanction of the government. The Rs.1,271 crore needed for the works, to be executed by the Public Works Department, is to be availed from the KIIFB, official sources said.

Of the works, the highest amount of Rs.56 crore needed is for the development of the Ambalappuzha-Thiruvalla road. The Chottupara- Ulappunni- Vattappahal- Upputhura- Elappara- Vandiperiyar- Vallakadavu Sathram- Kallar road and the Koduvalli- Pinarayi- Anjarakkandi- Kannur Aiport four-lane road needs Rs.50 crore each. The Vettamukku- Thevalakkara- Mynakappalli- Sasthamkotta- Manamppalli- Kanjirathummmudu- Thamarakkulam road that has made it to the notified list will need Rs.50 crore. As many as 38 works identified cost Rs.10 crore each. The Chief Engineer, Roads and Bridges, had been asked to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the works. The government has asked the Chief Engineer to ensure that the DPRs are prepared incorporating new technologies and with new road planning.

The DPRs should be need-based and objective. The Chief Engineer had also been asked to ensure that proper application of mind of the field engineers takes place while preparing DPR.

The Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB), the special purpose vehicle under the PWD, has been roped in for the works as an SPV and is a must for sourcing the Rs.1,271 crore from the KIIFB.

The DPR prepared by the various arms of the PWD Roads and Bridges will be forwarded to the KRFB, who, in turn, vets it and submits it to the KIIFB for approval and fund allocation.

The funds allocated from the KIIFB for the works will be routed through the KRFB, sources said. The KRFB will also have to take up the responsibility of supervising the works.
