RANCHI: The Jharkhand government has decided to replace old transformers and enhance their capacity in a bid to revamp the three-decade-old power distribution infrastructure in the state.
Chairing a review meeting of the energy department at Jharkhand Mantralaya on Wednesday, chief minister Raghubar Das directed the department to replace all 10 kVA transformers with 25kVA capacity so that breakdown due to overloading can be avoided.

The department has earmarked upgrading of about 5,000 transformers, of which 500 in 80 assembly constituencies of the state will be replaced in the first phase. The replacement drive will begin from Ranchi on September 7 in a programme hosted by the department in which Das will be present, whereas in all other constituencies, the respective MLAs and MPs will be invited to the programme and oversee the capacity enhancement drive.
"Planning in advance for uninterrupted power supply is the need of the hour, so tenders should be completed in a given timeframe and contractors and companies should be paid on time every month," he said, asking officials of the department to remain available to contractors and equipment providers to listen to their grievances.
"Those who delay supply or execution of the project must be identified and blacklisted, because the government is not ready to draw a bad name for their inefficiency," Das said.
Additional chief secretary, energy, RK Srivastava claimed that the transmission losses have been considerably reduced from 41% to 31% and further efforts are on to reduce this loss.
"With proper planning and replacement of transformers and dilapidated equipment, we aim to bring down transmission losses to 15% by 2019," he said. The department is set to purchase 1.71 lakh new transformers.
Chief secretary Raj Bala Verma, development commissioner Amit Khare, principal secretary to the chief minister Sanjay Kumar, secretary to the CM Sunil Kumar Barnwal and other officers were present during the review meet.
