RANCHI: Singhbhum MP Laxman Gilua was appointed the president of Jharkhand state BJP by the central leadership on Wednesday. National general secretary Arun Singh made an official announcement in New Delhi that the resignation tendered by Tala Marandi was accepted by national president Amit Shah and Gilua was appointed the state president with immediate effect.
Chief minister Raghubar Das and other senior leaders of the party congratulated Gilua for being given the responsibility in the party.
Gilua's nomination as the second tribal chief of the state unit puts an end to speculations that the party would be considering any non-tribal leader to head the state unit. It also ends the controversies that surrounded the former state chief Marandi, who was told by the central leadership to step down following which he had tendered his resignation on August 10 to the national president.
Marandi landed in soup after a case was lodged against him for getting his son married to a minor girl and charges under provisions of Prohibition of Child Marriage Act were levelled against him. Marandi invited further ire of the government and the central leadership after he started cricitising some of the decisions of the Raghubar Das-led BJP government, particularly over the issue of bringing an ordinance to amend the CNT and SPT Acts.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Sinha said that Gilua is in Delhi and soon be coming to Ranchi to assume charge. "Most of the leaders have expressed confidence in his leadership," he said.
