A painting contest organised by the Rotary Club of Tiruchirapalli Diamond City on Sunday evoked a good response as 26,910 students from 96 schools in Tiruchi, Perambalur, Pudukottai and Thanjavur districts participated in the event being organised for the fourth consecutive year now.
“What started as a small measure to create awareness of environmental awareness, has started paying dividends. As the response was good, we organised the contest for three categories of students – seniors, sub-juniors and juniors,” said B. Yogananda Kumar, project chairman. A special feature this year was the participation of a large number of students from special schools.
The paintings helped them understand their responsibility and duty for bringing pride to their institution and our nation, he said.
The contest was organised at respective schools and paintings with outstanding features and selected at school level entered the final round on Sunday.
M. A. Mohamed Taj, project co-chariman, said the topic for seniors was ‘Festivals of India’ and most students focussed on national integrity in their paintings. The topic for juniors was ‘Places of worship’ while sub-juniors concentrated on colouring.
The first prize went to A. Rajalingam, (special student category), S. Oviya (senior); A. B. Nagarithanya (junior) and D. Kashika (sub-junior).
S. Ramamoorthy, chairman of Sowdambika Group of School and M. Muruganandanm, District Governor, Rotary District 3000, gave away the prizes.
