NTSB: EL FARO AUDIO INCLUDES CAPTAIN’S ABANDON SHIP ORDER
The National Transportation Safety Board said Wednesday it recovered 26 hours of information from the ship’s recorder, including bridge audio from the final hours. The El Faro sank Oct. 1 after losing propulsion in the storm. All 33 aboard died.
LONGTIME PARISH PRIEST IN TAMPA BAY DIES AT 87
The church confirmed Monsignor Laurence E. Higgins died Wednesday. Higgins was sent to Tampa at age 29, less than five years after he took his vows. In the six decades that followed, he not only created a community of faith at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, but helped build Tampa’s commercial and social service infrastructure, serving on so many charitable boards he lost count.
FATHER: ACCUSED FACE BITER’S ORGANS ARE MALFUNCTIONING
Dr. Wade Harrouff says his 19-year-old son, Austin Harrouff, who is in critical but stable condition, has a malfunctioning liver, fluid in his lungs and a bleeding esophagus. The South Florida dentist said the hospital is doing an MRI on Wednesday.
FDLE TURNS PULSE PROBE OVER TO PROSECUTOR
The FDLE on Wednesday passed the case to State Attorney Jeff Ashton. The FDLE was investigating the death of gunman Omar Mateen, who killed 49 people and seriously injured another 53 patrons during the June 12 massacre at the gay nightclub. Mateen was killed in an exchange of gunfire with Orlando police officers and Orange County deputies after a three-hour standoff.
FLORIDA A&M LEADER REMAINS IN LIMBO AFTER TRUSTEE VOTE
University trustees narrowly rejected a proposal Wednesday to extend her current contract by one year. It’s the second time this summer trustees have refused to extend it and means she must leave by April 2017. Trustees voted, however, to create a special committee to meet with Mangum and come up with a proposal to consider in September.
