Sources said the family had come to the village by train just a few days before her death. During the journey, the woman had reportedly shot a video, alleging that her parents might kill her as they were against her relationship with a man based in Mumbai, who was also from their community.

“In the video, the girl was seen saying that she is in love but her parents were against the marriage. She said she was an adult and wanted to marry her boyfriend. She also named her father and brothers, saying they may kill her when she reaches Sikandrarau,” said Hathras SSP Ajay Pal Sharma.

“The girl had been living in Mumbai from the last few years. Her parents too had shifted there. Her uncles and cousins stay in her paternal house in Hathras,” he added.

Initially, some locals had contacted the police claiming that the death was suspicious. But an FIR was lodged on the complaint of the guard of the locality where she used to live, only after the video went viral, said sources.

Sikandrarau Circle Officer D K Balian said in the two-minute video, it seemed the deceased was accompanied by another person in the train washroom. “She was smiling in the video. She asked someone twice whether what she said was correct or not. It is obvious that someone else was there in the washroom with her. This could be the same person who had uploaded the video online,” said Sikandrarau Circle Officer D K Balian.

He added: “We have filed an FIR under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC. The district magistrate has also ordered that the body be exhumed for postmortem on Thursday.”
