Patna: A day after JD (U) president and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and sought "adequate central assistance" to fight floods and drought in the state, the party on Wednesday asked Narendra Modi what action he had taken so far to save the 'paani' and 'jawani' (water and youths) of the state.
Recalling Modi's one of the many poll promises, the JD (U) said the PM, while addressing election rallies at Munger, Samastipur and Begusarai on October 8, 2015 (during the state assembly polls), had said the two most important assets of Bihar were 'paani' (water) and 'jawani' (youths).
The PM had promised to take necessary steps to preserve them.
"When Bihar is facing devastating floods today, Modi should explain to people what plan of action his government has prepared to save the two "assets"," JD (U) spokesperson and MLC Neeraj Kumar told reporters.
The party also pointed out that Modi, being the BJP's PM candidate during the 2014 Lok Sabha election, had promised to save Bihar from its twin curse of floods and drought by inter-linking rivers.
"After becoming PM, Modi repeated the promise while addressing another election rally at Madhepura on November 1, 2015. Now, the people of Bihar want to know what action has the Modi government taken for inter-linking rivers," Neeraj said.
The JD (U) functionary attributed the floods in Bihar to waters coming from neighbouring Nepal.
"After becoming PM, Modi visited Nepal twice. Did he discuss the issue of managing floodwaters with the powers-that-be of Nepal? Did they give any assurance?" Neeraj asked.
