More spells of heavy to very heavy rains likely in next 24 hours:Met

Ahmedabad: The met department has predicted more spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall in North and Central Gujarat even as many parts of North Gujarat saw such spells in the last 24 hours with Modasa of Aravalli district recording the maximum downpour of 171 mm (around 7 inches).

The met bulletin today predicted heavy to heavy rainfall in Gujarat region (consisting mainly of North and Central Gujarat) and neighbouring union territory of Dadra Nagar Haveli in the next 24 hours also.

It said that owing to the low pressure over South Rajasthan and neighbourhood and associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending up to mid-tropospheric level, there will be more rain with spells of heavy to very heavy ones at isolated places in Gujarat.

In the last 24 hours a total of 167 talukas of 30 districts saw rainfall of whom the prominent places with heavy to very heavy rainfall were Modasa (171 mm) Meghraj (153), Vadgam (142) Palanpur (129), Deodar (99) , Deesa (83), Wav (76), Mahesana (70), Bhiloda (67), Dhansura (67) Dantiwada (65), Satlasana (65), Idar (64) Kheralu (64), Subir (63), Dangs (Ahwa) (62) and Himatanagar (60).

Many parts of the state including Ahmedabad which has seen 15 mm of rain in last 24 hours was seeing rain today as well. Till four pm today average rain in Ahmedabad was over 30 mm. Water level of Sabarmati river at Vasna barrage was 129 ft (danger mark 137 ft). 21 gates of the barrage were wide open for free flow in the wake of continuous inflow of water from Dharoi dam in neighbouring Mahesana.

Owing to rainfall in the state and the upstream areas of various rivers of the total 203 reservoirs of the state 29 have been put on high alert while 12 were on alert. The water level in the reservoir of Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam is continuously overflowing and was at 123.36 meter this morning which was 1.44 meter above the highest point of 121.92.
