AHMEDABAD: Not all who join institutes of national importance like the IIMs and IITs complete their term. According to the ministry of human resource development (MHRD), 42 students dropped out of the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn) in the last two academic years. Nine students dropped out of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) in the same period.

According to the MHRD figures, IIM-A ranked sixth among the 11 IIMs in terms of students dropping out during the academic years 2014-15 and 2015-16. IIM-A accounted for 9% of 104 students who dropped out of IIMs in the last two years. In 2014-15, six students dropped out of IIM-A. This number halved in 2015-16.
A total of 1,782 students dropped out of the 12 IITs in the last two years. Twenty seven dropped out of IIT-Gn in 2014-15 and 15 left in 2015-16. This amounts to 2.35% of dropouts from IITs.
Dean of academics at IIT-Gn, Amit Prashant, said that the students could have dropped out because they found lucrative jobs while pursuing the programme.
"Only 5% of the 800 students in all our programmes, including BTech, MTech, MSc and PhD, have dropped out. There are various reasons for this but mainly the students leave the institute if they get good jobs while pursuing a course," Prashant said.
He said that BTech students, who reach IIT-Gn after cracking the JEE exam, make up the lowest number of those dropping out. "Students pursuing a PhD or MTech drop out if they do not like the course. Beside this, pressure from the family to start earning could be a reason," he added.
