Vocational school rejects enrollment of admitted students

By Lin Mengyue (People's Daily Online)    16:10, August 23, 2016

A number of students admitted by a vocational school in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were recently rejected when they tried to formally enroll. The school explained that they could not provide sufficient beds, as the number of students who opted to enroll exceeded their estimates when making admissions decisions.

Guangxi Industrial and Commercial School sent out over 2,000 letters of admission, but only has beds for 900 students. One student at the school commented that this was not news, explaining that the school always admits more students than it is capable of enrolling. An employee working in the admissions office agreed, saying that because students applying for technical secondary schools like Guangxin Industrial and Commercial School usually send applications to several schools simultaneously, they have to issue more offers than they can accomodate in order to ensure sufficient enrollment numbers.

But the enrollment rate this year was higher than expected, the employee said. He added that the students now being denied enrollment did not confirm their registration and pay their tuition before Aug. 10, as the school requires. The local education department said it will recommend other schools to rejected students so that they may still continue their studies.
