Karnataka: 60-year-old farmer names police chief's son, ends life

The deceased, Shivanna, aged around 60, consumed poison at his house in Gavinagamangala on Sunday evening.

Bengaluru: Accusing DG&IGP Om Prakash’s son Karthikesh of exerting pressure on the police to not register a complaint, a farmer consumed poison and ended his life in Magadi taluk of Ramanagar district.

The deceased, Shivanna, aged around 60, consumed poison at his house in Gavinagamangala on Sunday evening. He was shifted to Victoria Hospital where he died early on Monday morning.

He has recorded his statement in a video before passing away. According to the video, he had a dispute with his younger brother Lokesh over land. In July 2015, Lokesh and his family had stripped Shivanna’s wife and had also assaulted his son. But when he went to the police station to file a complaint, they refused to register it. Instead, they wrote the complaint and forced him to sign it, the video alleges. He says in the video that the police refused to take his complaint as Mr Prakash’s son put pressure on the police. He has also accused Lakshmi Ganesh, who was DySP of Magadi subdivision, sub-inspector Suresh and other police staff of supporting his brother.

He alleges that Karthikesh is running a stone quarry business in a land belonging to Lokesh’s in-laws and the dispute with his brother was over the same piece of land.

Ramanagar SP Chandragupta told DC that Shivanna’s son filed a complaint with the Magadi police about his father’s death on Monday morning. “He has mentioned that his father took the extreme step as he was depressed over frequent fights with his brother. Based on his complaint, an unnatural death case was registered. Two-three hours after the complaint was filed, the video of a statement made my Shivanna was aired on TV channels. If any of his family members further file a fresh case, we will investigate into it.”
