Olympics 2016: India's major Rio disappointments - Saina Nehwal, Jitu Rai, Yogeshwar Dutt and others

India had sent their largest ever Olympics contingent of 119 athletes to Rio, hence there were hopes of a great medal haul. But that was not to be as India won only two medals with PV Sindhu winning silver and Sakshi Malik finishing with a bronze.

This was not the performance anticipated from the Indian athletes as they were doing well in world events. Though there were instances when India missed a medal by a whisker, some of the top players in their respective field were below par, resulting in India's poor show in Rio.

Here is a look at some top athletes, who disappointed with their performance in Olympics.

Saina Nehwal

The former world number one and bronze medal winner at the 2012 London Olympics was a top favourite to bring glory to the nation. But the shuttler failed to progress to the knockout stages after losing to world number 61, Ukraine's Maria Ulitina. It was later revealed that Saina had gone to Rio with a knee injury.

Jitu Rai

The shooter went to the Olympics after winning some huge world events in the recent past. With stunning performances in World Cup, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, the only medal missing from his cabinet was the Olympics. It is still empty after his dismal performance in the 10m and the 50m air pistol events. One cannot imagine whether it was nerves as Jitu failed to qualify for the finals of the 50m air pistol and finished last in the 10m finals.

Gagan Narang

Like Jitu, Gagan also failed to deliver in any of his events and more importantly in the men's 10m air rifle. Gagan had won the silver medal in the event at the 2012 London Olympics. Here, he did not qualify for the finals and finished 23rd.

Yogeshwar Dutt

All eyes were on Yogeshwar when the 65 kg freestyle wrestling event was held on the final day. He could have helped India win a third medal. But the 2012 London Games bronze medalist could not even manage a point and lost in the opening round to Ganzorigiin Mandakhnaran of Mongolia.

Tintu Luka

The track and field athlete is one of the most talented runners in the country. She might not have been a medal favourite in the 800m, but Luka could not even qualify for the finals. What was even more disappointing for Luka was her sixth place finish in the third heat. She started brightly, but could not keep her energy for two laps and other athletes overtook her in the final lap.

Deepika Kumari

The women's archery team could not deliver at Rio Olympics as they lost to Russia in the quarterfinals, but they still had hopes on Deepika in the individual event. Deepika looked decent in the opening few rounds, but failed to get her game going in the round of 16, losing to Tan Ya-ting from Chinese Taipei.
