Bhubaneswar: A man on Sunday opened fire on his father-in-law in front of a lawyers' house in Khurda, where he had gone to consult to lodge a dowry case against him. But the bullet missed its target. When the accused failed to injure his father-in-law the second time, he hit him on the head with a country pistol.
The accused was identified as Gangadhar Baliarsingh, 30, of Taraboi village under Jatni police limits.
He had an argument with his father-in-law, Kantha Jena, 51, of Sorana village under Tangi police limits a few days ago over a family dispute, police said.
Locals apprehended Gangadhar and handed him over to police. Jena was admitted to the district headquarters hospital at Khurda.
IIC of Khurda Town police station Ranjit Kumar Sahu said Gangadhar had married Jena's daughter Pinaki in 2013. The couple has a two-year-old son. Jena alleged that Gangadhar has beaten his daughter often over silly matters. So he got his daughter home two months ago, he added.
The officer said Jena had tried to solve the matter with the help of committee members of the two villages, but in vain. Then Jena decided to take the help of a lawyer to file a dowry case against his son-in-law.
On a tip-off, Gangadhar reached the residence of lawyer Ajit Patnaik in Khurda and called out for Jena in front of the house. When he came out, Gangadhar opened fire on the man, said Sahu.
Gangadhar told the police that his wife had extra-marital affair.
He got infuriated after his father-in-law went to a lawyer instead of correcting his daughter's mistake, the man told police.
