The last couple of months have been quite harrowing for Parel-based couple Santosh and Surekha Gupta. They have been constantly on their toes looking after their two-year-old daughter Drisha, who is suffering from acute liver cell failure — the reason for which is still unknown — and arranging for funds.

The Guptas have spent around Rs5 lakh for various tests, medicines and hospital charges. "So far, the hospital has been kind with us, but if we want to conduct further tests and appointments with specialists, we will need more money," said Surekha.

A team of 20 doctors and visiting specialists have been unable to find the reason for the liver cell failure despite no abnormalities being visible in any of the tests. According to the doctors, it is an intriguing and rare case, and treatment would be difficult if the correct reason is not found.

"The doctors have asked us to visit specialists in Delhi and we need to do that immediately as her condition is getting worse. She has jaundice for over a month now. We shall need Rs8 to 10 lakh. My husband earns only enough to sustain the family. We have used all our savings and also taken help from family and friends, but now have no other sources to arrange for this kind of money," she added.

The couple has three children, including Drisha, and lives in a one room kitchen apartment in Parel. Being a middle class family, they regret not having enough finances to save their child.

Now, to save Drisha, they need to consult the specialists in Delhi or abroad for which they don't have sufficient funds. But the Guptas are not willing to give up. After reading about various successful crowd-funding platform, helping families who were unable to pay for medical expenses, Drisha's parents have thought of doing the same. While they have already approached crowd funding websites, they are appealing to people to contribute to help save Drisha.

"We are also thinking of writing to the Prime Minister. This is a rare case where the reason for the organ failure is unclear. We will soon be sending reports to specialists abroad. Meanwhile, we are looking for finances to support any travel and medical bills that may happen," said Nisha Gupta, Drisha's aunt who is approaching every platform possible for arranging the finances.

Drisha's medical history

Born healthy, Drisha got fever in the month of June this year. Her fever was healed after medication, but soon she developed a swelling on her stomach. A pediatrician gave her a medicine citing it was a liver infection. While the swelling did not subdued, her skin grew pale and yellow.

"We rushed her to the Kasturba hospital on July 24, but they said that she was very critical and her survival chances were less. So, we immediately moved her to Bombay Hospital where she undergoing treatment. Though, it was thought that the liver dysfunction has affected the kidney, the tests showed the other organs are functioning perfectly. From July 26, specialists and doctors are trying to find the cause," said Surekha.
