The Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team (SIT) has filed a chargesheet against the former Godhra municipal councillor and alleged mastermind of the 2002 Godhra train carnage in which 59 people, mostly kar sevaks returning from Ayodhya, were burnt alive.
Farooq Mohammed Bhana, 55, was arrested by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on May 18 from Kalol-Khadki toll tax plaza in Panchmahal district, where he had gone to meet his family discreetly.
After his name surfaced in the case, he had fled Godhra and remained absconding for 14 years. He had settled in a Mumbai slum and worked as a small-time property dealer.
According to SIT officials, the role of Bhana has been established along with Abdul Rajak Kurkur and Salim Panwala. Kurkur and Panwala were convicted by a special designated court in 2011.
The chargesheet, filed earlier this week in the special court, stated that Bhana was among the main accused who hatched the conspiracy a day before the incident on February 27, 2002. He was allegedly part of the meeting held at Aman Guest House, located at Signal Faliya near the railway station, where allegedly the conspiracy was hatched.
The SIT has also annexed documents related to identification of Bhana by at least five witnesses.
