IMPORTANCE of following traffic rules and defensive driving on roads were the lessons advocated in a workshop conducted in Bhandup on Saturday. The workshop, organised by Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials in co-operation with various colleges from Mumbai University, advocated lessons on driving safe on roads.

Termed as a measure to bring awareness among the youth, the workshop, organised in Ramanand Arya D A V College, Bhandup, was attended by two representatives each from at least 48 colleges in the city. Lessons on importance of using helmet, wearing seat-belts, driving reaction and other safety lessons were advocated through presentations and booklets.

“Accidents due to over-speeding and not wearing helmets involve the youth. The workshop was aimed at making them realise that it is better to be safe than sorry. The representatives will help spread the message on driving safe,” said Ajay Bhamre, principal, Ramanand Arya D A V College.

“Only when traffic rules are followed, we see the number of road accidents go down in the city. This is just a measure to re-enforce basic traffic rules against drunk driving, lane cutting and others. ‘Maintaining precaution is the only way to drive safe’ — is the message we want to advocate,” said Sanjay Sassane, RTO officer, Wadala (East).

Also, lessons for drivers of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply Trust (BEST) was part of the workshop and posters of the model bus promoted importance of road safety rules. “The model bus has been designed in such a way that it will advocate drivers on driving safe when on road. As the bus is one of the major heavy vehicles on the roads of Mumbai, necessary precautions — both by bus drivers and other motorists on the road — become important,” said S Sawant, counselor on road safety.

Festive offer

Students from National Service Scheme (NSS) of D A V assisted with promotion and other details of the workshop. “Through this outreach, I want to let peers of my age understand the importance of practicing care when on roads,” said Bhagayashree Chauhari, a student.
