HC quashes sacking of Chorwad civic body chief

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court on Friday quashed a decision of the director of municipalities to sack president of Chorwad municipality, Vimal Chudasama, who had gifted steel utensils to 48 girls during mass marriages ceremony organized by the Koli community.
The Chorwad municipality passed a resolution to arrange for 'kanyadan' of 48 Koli girls during a mass marriage ceremony.The brides were also given gifts by the municipality. But this was not acceptable to the government, which argued that the funds were meant for municipality and they could not be utilized for political gain. The municipality president is the custodian of this fund.
Director of municipalities disapproved of the expenditure incurred during the marriage function and Chudasama was removed from his post. Chudasama then moved the HC arguing that the decision to give away gifts to the brides were taken by all the members of the municipality and a resolution was passed to this effect, and he was not the only person responsible for the decision.
