Man involved in 1989 shootout arrested

A man allegedly involved in a shootout in 1989 was caught by the officers from Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of city crime branch on Thursday.

The arrested person has been identified as Ganesh Singh Bisht alias Danny.

According to joint commissioner of police, crime, Sanjay Saxena, on December 30, 1989, four unknown persons conducted a shootout in broad daylight at Goa Street in Fort. One Paul Neman was left injured in the incident and an offence in this regard was registered at MRA Marg police station.

"Probe revealed that the crime was committed by four gangsters, Anil Parab, Sunil Sawant, Sharad Shetty and Bisht. The shootout was fallout of a rivalry," said KMM Prasanna, additional commissioner of police, crime.

He added that while Parab was deported from Dubai to Mumbai in 2003, Sawant and Shetty had died later, and Bisht remained absconded in the case.

"It was learnt that Bisht, who was currently working as a farmer at Pangroli in Uttarakhand, was also handling activities of the Chhota Rajan gang. On receipt of information, the accused was nabbed from the international airport in Andheri (E). He was then placed under arrest and was remanded to police custody till August 25," said Vinayak Vast, senior police inspector, AEC.

Vast stated that the accused is an old member of Rajan gang and previously resided in Tilak Nagar, Chembur. He had murder cases registered against him at Santa Cruz, Tilak Nagar and Panvel.
