Young Indians are getting more venturesome -45% of those surveyed in a nationwide poll say they see themselves turning entrepreneurs and launching a startup in the next five years. Also, 54% would rather work with a startup than a large corporation. But they are less adventurous about hitching up romantically and randomly through dating apps.
The poll was conducted for TOI by marketing agency Ipsos on the Inshorts app between July 25 and August 7, with around 1.5 lakh users taking part.
More than 75% of respondents were aged below 35, largely students and professionals, and came from 10 cities -New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Chandigarh.
What is
young India's take on issues that have dominated the headlines lately? The
Udta Punjab row has worked against scissor-happy censor board chief Pahlaj Nihalani, who gets a thumbs down. On certain issues such as atrocities on Dalits, opinion is divided. Safety in public places remains a bigger concern for women (53.2% say they don't feel safe) than men (28.2%). Surprisingly , almost 57% support the ban on liquor in certain states. Unsurprisingly, more women (62.8%) than men (55.8) back prohibition. More than 61% respondents are all for banning student politics from campuses, possibly a fallout of the JNU and Hyderabad University controversies.
