The system, called foliage penetrating radar, is fitted with highly-sensitive sensor capable of capturing human and transport movement in thick jungles, they explained.

The Israeli radars will be installed at various locations in the valley and connected to a central control room that will receive its signals and images of suspect targets, their vehicles, weapons and explosives. Response will be quick and precise when the targets with their capabilities are located, a top security official said.

A BSF team is scheduled to visit Israel later this month as part of the acquisition plan, according to the official. The team will also undergo training there in the use of the radar system.

OPERATION CHAKRAVYUH

India is building impregnable defences along the borders with Pakistan in a project modelled after Israeli security mechanisms, according to official sources.

Codenamed Operation Chakravyuh, the project aims to plug any possible routes for terrorists to infiltrate into the country, be it land, air or sea, top military and home-ministry sources say.

Under Operation Chakravyuh, a network of sensitive censors, radars, cameras, optical fibre and automatic guns are to be laid along the Pakistan border, which will be linked to the proposed 24x7 control room. Various locations have already been identified in J&K and Gujarat to induct equipment at every few kilometres as part of an initial project, defence and BSF sources said.

The BSF is spending between Rs 18 and Rs 20 crore in Jammu and Kashmir alone for the first phase of the overall plan, according to official documents. Devices are being procured from several companies for the first round of the project.
