How do you spot new talent?
There has to be something about the girl and I need to instantly like her.It's all in the eyes; all my leading ladies have expressive eyes. Of course, she should have a good appearance and should also be able to emote well. People think that I am lucky for newbies, and in fact, I receive pictures of around 20-30 girls every day.
What about this film appealed to you?
The producer, Chandru, who liked my film Arasu, approached me as he wanted me to launch Dilip. I am not arrogant with newbies, and having worked with many over the years, I treat them well and know how to get work out of them. I liked the script and agreed to be a part of the film.
What is special about this film?
I won't say that this is a never-before-seen story, but it has been presented in a fresh manner. The screenplay is showcased in a new style. The story is about a young couple and what happens when there is an ego clash. So, you will first see the love story develop, then a twist at the interval, and how the problem gets sorted in a comical way. There is no villain in the story; the situation is the villain. There is a sense of richness and grandiose in the film. It is a pucca family entertainer, as there is no vulgarity or double entendres.
How has the response been so far?
We sent the trailer to colleges across the state and got very good response, especially in Hubballi and other parts of North Karnataka, where the true mass audience resides. They really liked the dialogues and were even repeating them when we went there for promotions. I am very happy with the way the film has already reached people.

What is your take on masala films, as opposed to experimental ones?
The Kannada film industry has produced good experimental films off late, like Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu, U-Turn and Karvva. But I feel that Kannada audiences prefer commercial films. Our industry is similar to Tollywood, but our audiences don't accept the kind of exaggeration as seen in Telugu cinema; no one here can digest the hero beating up 100 people. Here, people like watching commercial films filled with sentiments, emotions, good songs ' basically, reasonable, clean family entertainers. And Crazy Boy is just that.
