Before we swiped right, double-tapped, or slid into the DMs, we exchanged the most coveted letter/number combination of all — the BBM pin.
Lana Del Rey‘s 2011 track “BBM Baby,” recorded pre-Born To Die, pays tribute to the days of Blackberry Messenger and has been making its rounds on Tumblr lately. It’s a fun, dance-pop inspired track where Del Rey sings, “I be BBMing you, telling you / All the things I’m gonna do to you / When you get home baby,” she playfully teases above a retro synth-pop beat. “He signs XO, hugs, hey / I know it’s true love ’cause my heart goes yayyy.”

In a 2011 interview with Filter, producer Chris Glover (aka Penguin Prison), was asked about his time in the studio with Del Rey. He said, “She came over and we worked on a song a while ago. It was called ‘BBM Baby,’ I guess it was about her Blackberry Messenger. I also did a remix to one of her songs called ‘Blue Jeans’ which came out recently and people seem to like that one.”
There’s a stark difference between this new sugary, synth-pop gem and the darker, moodier tracks the Coney Island Queen usually serves up. Either way, we would never complain about new (old) music from Lana.
