Flooding recedes in North, Nan still hard hit

Water levels have returned to normal in two of three northern provinces hard hit by flooding, but the situation remains serious in some areas of Nan, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department chief Chatchai Promlert said on Wednesday.

In Nan, flash floods and landslides hit 206 villages in 34 tambons in Santisuk, Chalerm Phra Kiat, Muang, Tha Wang pha, Pua, Phu Phiang, Mae Charim and Wiang Sa districts, affecting 4,109 households. One person was reported killed.

Water was still rising in Wiang Sa and Mae Charim districts, but had receded elsewhere,

In Mae Hong Son, 30 villages in six tambons of Pai district were flooded. The situation had returned to normal.

In Phayao, water in Nam Ngim stream overflowed and inundated 98 villages in 16 tambons of Pong, Chiang Kham, Chiang Muan and Phu Sang districtz, affecting 3,405 families. Two people were killed and three injured in flood-related incidents. The situation had returned to normal.

Mr Chatchai said teams had been despatched to examine damage and distribute survival gear and necessities to affected people and assist in moving people's belongings to higher ground.

The weather office has warned people in the North, upper Northeast, East and the western coast of the South to brace for more heavy rain.

Rapid mobile emergency units have been put on standby to provide assistance in troubled areas.
