VAT 69 to have own camp after 47 years

Ipoh: The Malaysian Police Commando Unit VAT 69 are expected to have their own camp after squatting at the North Brigade General Operations Force camp in Ulu Kinta, here for 47 years.Department of Homeland Security and Public Order director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sabtu Osman said the construction of the camp on 161.874 hectares adjacent to the North Brigade Headquarters PGA Ulu Kinta is scheduled to begin next year.

He said the camp will be built in stages at an estimated cost of RM208 million.

"After 47 years, it is time the Vat 69 Commando unit has its own camp and we plan to provide housing but for the start we will have a complex for the office and training area," he told reporters after the presentation of wings to participants of the Basic Tactical Parachuting Course Series 1/2016 at the North Brigade Shooting Range in Ulu Kinta here, Tuesday.

At the event, Muhammad Sabtu also pinned the Jump Wings on two officers and 29 members who had successfully completed the basic course for a month.

Meanwhile, Inspector Jong Pit Chiao, 29, stole the limelight as being the only female officer who participated in the course this time. "I completed training at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) in April, after that I served in the Commando 69 Unit and then I was selected to attend this course," she said.

A native of Kuching, Sarawak, she hopes in the future more women members will follow her footsteps.

She aspires to head the women's parachute team one day.– Bernama
