State Handloom and Textiles Minister O.S. Manian on Friday sought ‘protection’ inside the Assembly as Opposition members vociferously objected to certain remarks made by him.

Mr. Manian has been at the centre of many recent arguments and walk-outs by the DMK in the Assembly. Every time Mr. Manian intervenes or rises to answer a question, many DMK members randomly comment aloud, “He has started talking. Trouble is coming…”

Tuesday was no different when Mr. Manian intervened during DMK MLA Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi’s maiden speech. DMK members pointed out that the Minister was just repeating what Mr. Poyyamozhi said.

Also, the DMK objected to his repeated intervention as the Minister was set to reply to the discussion on the demand for grants of his department later in the afternoon.

Suddenly, in the midst of his intervention and the vociferous objection from the DMK, Mr. Manian said, “I request the Speaker to provide me security in the House. I request you to give me protection.”

Amid laughter and comments from the Opposition benches, a surprised Speaker immediately replied, “All members will get protection. No need to worry.” Mr. Manian then continued his speech, but a few DMK members were heard asking about the need for such a statement.
