L&T gets Maharashtra government contract to convert Nagpur into smart city

MUMBAI: Larsen & Toubro will be the implementation partner to the Maharashtra government to convert Nagpur into the country’s first large-scale integrated smart city, the engineering major said Tuesday.

The project is a part of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government’s plan to use smart solution technology to upgrade towns and cities.

L&T’s business unit, namely Smart World and Communication, will execute the project that entails laying of 1200 km of optical fiber network, setting up 136 wifi hotspots across the city, establishing 100 digital interactive kiosks and developing city surveillance systems.

“After Jaipur, this is the most significant step in the country’s journey towards establishing smart cities and we are delighted to be participating in transforming Nagpur into one,” said SN Subrahmanyan, deputy managing director and president, Larsen & Toubro.

Subrahmanyan had told ET earlier that he expects the Smart World and Communication unit to become a $1 billion business in 3-4 years.

Shares of L&T ended at Rs 1505.45 on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Tuesday, up 1.1% from the previous close.
