Local youths take on love

The Bridgetown Theatre Company (BTC) will be performing their new original musical, in collaboration with Bridgetown High School, at the High School Jam at GrandWest’s Grand Arena on Saturday.

The piece Love is beautiful was born in March this year when Bridgetown High School sent 14 of their learners to GrandWest’s Inspired Stages workshop, where they were trained in the arts of dance, drama and music. The annual High School Jam, which kicks off at 10:00 on Saturday 20 August, encourages learners to conquer their fears, invest in their passions and develop their self-esteem, through performance art.

Love is beautiful tells the story of a shy and insecure young woman who falls in love with a dashing young man, only to discover that she’s the subject of a bet between him and his friends.

The team behind the musical chose to do this, because they feel strongly that many people have lost their musical identity by choosing to support international artists instead. The 20-strong cast hail from Bridgetown, Kew Town, Vanguard Estate, Heideveld, Mitchell's Plain, Elsies River, Wynberg and Lansdowne and features musicians Shaun Abrahams (drums), Taygan Engel (keyboard), Ryan Petersen (guitar), and Lisa Wesson (bass guitar).

The piece has been written and directed by Theo.E. Davids, with Joelene Daniels as producer and choreographer. Mark Goliath is responsible for the musical arrangement with Jennifer Barnard using her skills as a vocal coach. V Tickets for the show on Saturday 20 August cost R50. Call Fowzia Khan on 082 716 7179 for bookings and more information. Visit the Bridgetown Theatre Company Facebook page for more about what they do.
