COIMBATORE: Around 400 students of Si Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology in Coimbatore boycotted classes on Tuesday morning and staged a protest alleging that the college management was not permitting them to enter the campus on their two-wheelers.
On Tuesday morning, some students were stopped by security guards at the college entrance.
They were not allowed to enter the campus on their two-wheelers. After an argument with the security guards, the students decided to boycott classes and stage a protest outside the campus.
"Around 500 students commute to college on two-wheelers. The college provides a pass for such students. When we came to college this morning, the security guard refused to allow us," said a third year student, unwilling to disclose his name and course.
Students alleged that the issue had been bothering them for a few months now. "The pass is issued to the students every semester. They give only provide two days to collect these passes. There are chances that the student might be busy with academics or could be on leave. They should give us at least a week to collect the passes," the student said.
The students alleged that the management was forcing students to opt for college bus.
When TOI tried to contact the college management for a comment, representatives were not available.
