Agasthyampalli, Vedaranyam

Inspired by Gandhiji’s actions at Dandi, Rajaji (C. Rajagopalachari) took the lead in organising a salt satyagraha in the south. On April 30, 1930, Rajaji and ten satyagrahis stealthily made their way under the cover of darkness to a salt marsh at Agasthyampalli, about three kilometres away from Vedaranyam. By dawn, the men had collected salt and successfully broken the Salt Act.

A memorial pillar of Agasthyampalli marks the momentous event.
