Did you know that Gokhale was the mentor of Gandhiji? This year being the 150{+t}{+h}birth anniversary of Gokhale, it is only apt for us to remember his contribution to the Freedom Struggle.

Gokhale was an important leader of the Indian National Congress and he founded the Servants of India Society. He campaigned for social reforms and self-rule but his methodologies were moderate and he believed in bringing in reforms by working with the government institutions.

Gokhale was educated at the Elphinstone College, Bombay, and was one of the few Indians then to be educated in English. Gokhale was a significant influence on the young Gandhi. He had visited him in South Africa in 1912. When Gandhi returned from South Africa, Gokhale briefed him about the socio-political scene in India. Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, was also said to have been inspired by Gokhale.
