Irrigation Minister D. Umamaheswara Rao has said that the State government is planning to set up a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to develop inland waterway with the support of the Central government.

Addressing the gathering after hoisting the national flag at the district police grounds marking the 70th Independence Day celebrations here on Monday, the Minister said: “Alignment of the waterway between Pulichintala and Kakinada will be taken up by spending nearly Rs. 3,000 crore.”

The Minister also highlighted that tenders were invited to develop a channel between Mukthyala and Vijayawada in the river Krishna for boating operations. On food security and production, the Minister said that the State government targeted to achieve 19 per cent growth rate in the agriculture sector and an action plan was chalked out achieve it.

On aquaculture, the Minister said: “Aqua industry will contribute significantly to the State economy as it had already achieved aqua production above 8.3 lakh tonnes in the present financial year.”

Mr. Umamaheswara Rao was accompanied by Excise Minister K. Ravindra and Krishna District Collector Babu.A. Students of various educational institutions presented cultural programmes.
