Volunteers clear litter on Sathuragiri Hills

August 16, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - THENI:

A team of volunteers from Vizhuthugal Youth Movement in Periyakulam and Thamaraikulam has embarked on a mission on Monday to clean the Upputhurai forest path on the Varushandu hills in Theni district, one of the shortest routes to reach Sri Sundara Mahalingam Temple on Sathuragiri hills in Virudhunagar district.

Since the path was used by more than 50,000 pilgrims during the recent Adi Amavasai festival celebrations at the temple, plastic litter was strewn all along the path.

In a single day, the entire forest path and reserve forest area was filled with garbage, posing grave threat to wildlife and the environment.

To clean the entire area and restore it to its original state, Vizhuthugal Youth Movement members started their mission from Upputhurai and trekked on the hilly terrain upto Yanai Gajam through Attuparai area and collected all wastes left by the pilgrims.
