Bangladesh yesterday paid tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at the portrait of the great leader at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi Road in the capital yesterday, marking the National Mourning Day.
On this day in 1975, Bangabandhu and most of his family members were killed at his house by a cabal of army officers as part of a long- running conspiracy by anti-liberation forces.
The day is officially observed as the National Mourning Day.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stood solemnly before his portrait and placed wreaths.
Sheikh Hasina received the president as he arrived at Dhanmondi Road. After the placing of wreaths, a contingent of Bangladesh Armed Forces gave a honour guard.The president and the prime minister, who is also the eldest daughter of the father of the nation, stood in solemn silence in front of the portrait.
Later, a prayer was offered seeking eternal peace for Bangabandhu and the martyrs of August 15.
Later, the prime minister went to the Banani graveyard in the city and paid homage to her mother Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib, her brothers Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russell and other martyrs of August 15, by placing wreaths and showering petals.
Later, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went to Mujib’s ancestral home at Tungipara in Gopalganj district and paid tributes at his mausoleum there.
A contingent drawn from the three services gave a state salute on the occasion while the bugle played the last post.
The chiefs of the three services were also present.Accompanied by her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, the prime minister then offered prayer at his grave. Prayers were also offered seeking continued peace, progress and prosperity in the country.
