A 40-year-old man allegedly stabbed his wife to death and attempted to take his own life at Kandivli Monday, the police said.
While his wife Jaya Patil succumbed to the injuries, Gajanan Patil, a rickshaw puller, survived the attack and is currently recuperating at Shatabdi Hospital. The Samta Nagar police station in Kandivli has registered a case of murder against him.
The incident took place at 11.15 am at their tenement in Kadam Wadi in the Hanuman Nagar area. Gajanan and Jaya reportedly often used to argue over monetary issues and his habit of consuming alcohol, a police officer said.
“The duo had fought last night as well on a similar issue. This morning, the fight went out of control, and Gajanan, in a fit of rage, stabbed his wife to death and then attempted suicide by stabbing himself with the same chopper,” an officer said.
The couple’s 13-year-old son, who was also in the house when the incident took place, started shouting for help. His screams drew neighbours’ attention and they rushed to help. The neighbours, however, found the door locked from inside.
The shocked 13-year-old then alerted the police. They broke down the door and took the couple to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli. The woman was pronounced dead on arrival, while Gajanan continues to be in a serious state.
Dilip Yadav, Senior Inspector of Samta Nagar police station, said the couple was involved in a confrontation, which allegedly led the man to murder his wife. He added that Gajanan was under the influence of alcohol when the murder took place.
Another police officer said once Gajanan recovers, they will place him under formal arrest on charges of murder.
