Miguel Angel Jimenez survived a late stutter to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the US Senior Open in Ohio.
The Spaniard held a four-stroke advantage until a run of three bogeys in four holes along the back nine saw him card a one-under 69 for a three-under-par total of 207, a shot clear of nearest challenger Gene Sauers.
With the threat of bad weather bringing play forward at Scioto Country Club, groups of three played off a two-tee start to get the third round completed.
Overnight leader Joey Sindelar followed on from Friday's round-of-the-day 66 with a birdie-three at the first, but slipped down the leaderboard with back-to-back blemishes from the third and a double-bogey at the fifth.
Sauers took advantage to pick up shots at the third and first, as Jimenez, beginning three strokes back, posted a first birdie of the day at the second to get within two of the lead.
The temporary pacesetter then carded three bogeys in a four-hole stretch from the fifth, while Jimenez made birdies at the seventh and 12th to open up a four-shot cushion over the field.
Successive blemishes by the Spaniard over the following two holes were halted by a 10-foot birdie at the 15th, only for him to cut his lead with a bogey-five at the next.
Jimenez, who took a four-shot lead into the final round of last month's Senior Open, then two-putted from 20 feet to par the 17th and missed a birdie opportunity in driving rain at the last.
Ian Woosnam, Loren Roberts and Billy Mayfair sit in a three-way tie for third on one over, with 2010 champion Bernhard Langer part of the group a further stroke off the pace.
Sindelar signed for a seven-over 77, while three-time senior major champion Colin Montgomerie is eight adrift following a mixed 72.
