Katie Taylor knocked out of Rio Olympics after shock opening round defeat

Ireland's defending women's lightweight champion looked a long way short of her best as she struggled to cope with her opponent's continued advances.

It was the latest shock loss for the five-times world champion, whose bid for a sixth successive crown was ended by Estelle Mossely of France in May.

Taylor admitted: "It's been a very, very tough year and a very challenging year.

"I've had so many losses that I'm sick of losing at this stage this year. I don't know what I'm doing wrong really.

"I really felt that I was prepared for every opponent here this year and I really feel I should be winning those fights a lot easier but it just didn't happen."

Taylor's defeat was the latest in a dismal Olympic boxing campaign for Ireland, which now has only reigning world champion Michael Conlan remaining at bantamweight.

With a guaranteed medal at stake, Potkonen, like Taylor a world bronze medallist this year, took control of the first round, catching her opponent with a fine right cross.

Despite Taylor rallying in a competitive fight, the Finn always seemed to have the slight advantage and the verdict, though tight, was hardly surprising.

"Everyone knows how much the Olympics means to me," added Taylor. "I left no stone unturned in preparation and I really believed that I'd come home with a gold medal but it wasn't to be."
