AERB gives nod for generating power from KKNPP Unit 2

Kudankulam, Tamilnadu, Aug 15 (UNI) Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) had given its clearance for generating power from the Unit 2 of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), after completing the mandatory tests.
Addressing the 70th Independence Day celebrations at KKNPP complex here today, KKNPP Site Director R.S.Sundar said the Unit 2 achieved criticality on July 10 at 2056 hrs. It is the country’s second VVER-1000 type Pressurized Water Reactor belonging to the Light Water Category. Having completed mandatory tests, the AERB had given its clearance yesterday for going forward. We will be proceeding towards producing power from the unit soon.
He said KKNPP Unit 2 is India’s 22nd Nuclear Power Reactor and this will add 1,000 Mega Watts power to the Southern grid and will further raise the contribution of nuclear power to 6,780 MW.

Referring to the dedication of Unit 1 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalitha jointly through video conferencing on August 10, he said it is a very glorious occasion and significant milestone in Indo-Russian nuclear partnership.
Mr Sundar said the Unit 1 has so far generated 10,900 million units of electricity since its synchronisation with the grid.
“I am very happy to share, today we have completed 175 days of continuous operation of Unit 1 and its performance is excellent,” he said.
Stating that soil excavation work was currently in progress for Unit 3 and 4 of KKNPP, he said six lakh cubic metres of soil excavation had been completed so far and the first pouring of concrete would likely to take place by the beginning of next financial year. For Units 5 and 6, techno commercial negotiations are going on between India and Russia, he added.
