All signs point to Doug Martin having back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers enter 2016 with two strong running backs in Doug Martin and Charles Sims. Martin continues to be the primary back, running between the tackles for tough yardage, including goal-line, and setting up play-action. The  sure-handed Sims emerged as a real threat on third-down last year, in the short to intermediate passing game and downfield.

Martin's showed no signs of slowing down since inking a new five-year, $35.75 million contract. In fact, he's looked great in camp, and all signs point to him having another 1,000-yard season if he can remain healthy. The only concern that impacts both running backs is the offensive line -- Pro Bowler Logan Mankins has retired and his replacement, J.R. Sweezy still hasn't practiced due to a back injury. As it's looking right now, Kevin Pamphile, a converted offensive tackle, would assume the left guard role.

Doug Martin

ESPN Fantasy Projection: 1,208 rushing yards, 7 TDs, 244.7 receiving yards, 1 receiving TD

Over or under: I'll go over on rushing yards -- 1,400, so right in line with what he did last year and his rookie season. Some have wondered if Sims' emergence will lessen Martin's production, but as long as this Bucs team continues to be a run-first team that utilizes play-action, which it is, Martin will be a focal point of the offense. He'll be utilized in the short passing game on bubble screens and quick pitches too, but a lot of that will fall on Sims. As far as touchdowns, I'll go with seven rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns -- Martin always has a place at the goal line.

Charles Sims

ESPN Fantasy Projection: 443 rushing yards, 2 TDs, 456 receiving yards, 2 TDs

Over or under: Sims recently suffered an ankle injury in training camp that forced him to miss the first game of the preseason, but it shouldn't impact him heading into the regular season. Still, I'm not sure I can see him reaching 1,000 all-purpose yards in back-to-back seasons. I'm going to agree with the projection, that 900 feels about right there, and I'm taking one over on touchdowns -- I think he gets five for the season, three of them receiving.
