Six of the biggest games heading for a September 2016 release, in annual soccer sims "PES 2017" and "FIFA 17," racing extravaganza "Forza Horizon 3," sprawling adventure "Final Fantasy XV," plus expansive basketball sim "NBA 2K17" and immersive, swirling psychodrama "Persona 5."

Pro Evolution Soccer 2017

A focus on natural, realistic movement and ball control, enhanced set pieces, a step change improvement in goalkeeping, deeper tactical nuance and more precise passing come with "PES 2017." The PS4 benefits from one of the best aspects of "PES" on PC, the ability to share updated player data files that allows for community-driven updates as seasons progress.

Available on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC
Release date: Week of September 13

Persona 5

Adventure game fans turn their eyes towards Japan hoping for another distinctive blend of Jungian psychodrama, high school drama, and alternate-universe adventure upon the release of "Persona 5," pending a wider release on Valentine's Day in 2017.

Available on: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3
Release date: September 15 in Japan, February 2017 internationally

NBA 2K17

Both the MyLeague and MyGM (team manager) modes return, with the option to expand the NBA structure even beyond 30 teams in a number of ways, while both the 1992 USA Basketball Dream Team as well as the 2016 US MNT feature as guest stars.

Available on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3
Release date: September 20

Forza Horizon 3

The open road racer and engine-revver heads to Australian climes in a series first, with environments ranging from beachside to rocky outback. As well as the usual singleplayer, multiplayer, and a cornucopia of sleek and shiny vehicles to commandeer (including beach buggies and Aussie utility vehicles), there's a co-operative mode for up to four players, and compatibility between Xbox One and Windows PC versions of the game.

FIFA 17

A big change this year is the addition of a dedicated singleplayer story mode, with dialogue and decision-making choices, as players take a teenage prospect to international stardom in the English Premier League. Premier League managers have also been included for the first time, while Europe-based stars Eden Hazard, Anthony Martial, James Rodriguez and Marco Reus have been brought in to further enhance the realism.

Available on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC (also on PS3, Xbox 360)
Release date: Week of September 29

Final Fantasy XV

Shaping up to become another sprawling, lavishly produced entry to the long-running "Final Fantasy" series, this one's been in the works since 2006 (in various forms) and now has its protagonist and his friends styled after a boy band -- not necessarily a bad look -- as the player attempts to rescue his kingdom from a huge and all-consuming empire.

Available on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Release date: September 30
