NASHIK: Roads and highways in the city were packed with cars as the long weekend and the pause in rain beckoned everyone on to the roads. But it was the parked vehicles that caused all the trouble this time.
Shirdi Saibaba Sansthan officials said they witnessed double the number of pilgrims on Saturday, which was roughly over 3 lakh. The rush was also seen on Trimbak Road as people were making the most of the extended weekend by going there to pay their obeisance in the holy month of Shravan.

The rush in the city was mainly in front of malls as motorists were using the roads to park their two-wheelers. The traffic police, who continued with their routine drive failed to keep a check on the illegal parking.
The lane connecting ABB Circle and Untawadi road signal was blocked by motorists who had parked illegally. By evening, the traffic condition got worse in the city College road also saw a large number of people parking their vehicles by the road-side, thereby making movement of traffic difficult.
On Nashik road too, the rush was evident since morning. The traffic police said that they had taken up a special drive at Raviwar Karanja. Gurunath Naidu, police inspector with the city traffic branch said, "Due to holidays, we expected a rush of vehicles. However, there are no reports of traffic snarls. Regarding people parking their vehicles illegally, the traffic police is taking action against them."
On Saturday, 18 such cases were brought to notice, 3 registered with the Ambad police, 2 with Indiranagar police, 5 with Satpur police, 1 with Nashik Road police and 7 with the Sarkarwada police.

Police said that they were mainly focussing on the complaints related to traffic in different parts of the city. Inspector Naidu said that they challaned 80 rickshaw drivers on Saturday night and detained 17 autos. On Sunday, they booked 81 rickshaw drivers and detained 5 vehicles.
The long weekend and the break in the rains brought people on the roads in large numbers, leading to heavy traffic across the city and on the state and national highways. Though no roads witnessed traffic snarls, parking vehicles became a problem on the city roads.
