Surat gang rape: Fourth accused still at large

SURAT: The fourth accused involved in the gang rape of a 21-year-old mentally ill woman here four days ago is still at large. The role of police is under the scanner for having intentionally delayed registration of the complaint. The complaint was registered only after PAAS activists reportedly intervened in the matter.
The woman, a resident of Sachin, was allegedly gang-raped on Thursday by four persons at Hojiwala Industrial Estate.The accused had abducted the woman from a road in Hojiwala Industrial Estate. She was pushed into an auto and taken to a room behind a warehouse where she was raped by the four accused. Police detained Alok Rajput, Wasim Ghantiwala and Ismail Patel for questioning on Saturday and arrested them on Sunday while Manjro is on the run. tnn
"Initially, police tried to delay medical examination of the rape survivor and did not cordon off the spot where she was allegedly raped. But we made sure after our discussions with senior police officers that the procedure was started immediately and the complaint was registered," Malaviya added.
M H Shaikh, police inspector, Sachin police station, was not available for his comments.
