Chinese diver He Zi wins silver in 3-meter, diamond in love

The break-neck competitive atmosphere of the Olympics gave way to a sweet scene when Chinese diver Qin Kai proposed to his girlfriend of six years, He Zi, right after she won a silver medal for the women's 3-meter springboard event.

The romantic overture occurred after He’s award ceremony at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Stadium on Aug. 14. Qin, a 30-year-old diver who won bronze in the men's 3-meter synchronized diving event three days earlier, watched his girlfriend from the sidelines of the ceremony. Just after she walked off the podium, Qin fell to his knees and presented He with a delicate ring.

The lovestruck athlete offered a proclamation of his love amid the applause of spectators and the clicking of cameras. A shocked He was brought to tears before eventually saying yes, much to the delight of the crowd.

“I forgot exactly what he said. It was such a surprise, and I was still caught up in the excitement over the silver medal. But I remember that he said, 'marry me and I’ll let you be the boss!'” He said in an interview with CCTV. As she spoke, He wiped tears of joy from her eyes.

Qin is a three-time Olympic medalist, having won gold in the 3-meter synchronized diving event in Beijing and London before winning bronze in Rio.

“I want to stand up in front of the whole world to propose to you, to get the blessings of the whole world. I won’t miss this chance for love. I’m crazy for you,” Qin said to his fiancé-to-be.

This is the second engagement that has occurred at the Rio Games. An Olympic volunteer previously proposed to a Brazilian rugby player on-field after the finals.
