AHMEDABAD: On Sunday, more than 100 participants retraced the historic path of the Kranti Yatra in the Walled City of Ahmedabad, to hear stories of our freedom struggle that no textbook reveals. The recollection of these memories is of utmost importance as India will celebrate Bapu's 150th birth anniversary in 2017.
Before the yatra began, the participants assembled at the old Urdu Shala at Panch Kuva where professor Rajesh Iyer of the Agra-Atrauli gharana rendered Rag Ramkali.
The Kranti Yatra mapped the homes of freedom fighters in the Walled City, paying tribute to the heroes of 1857; of the 1915 struggle; and of the Navnirman Movement. Ahmedabad Municipal Board had also contributed to the TOI-Rediscover Your City Heritage Walk series.
The participants were led on the heritage walk by Girish Gupta. The sites on the itinerary included the bomb factory, the United Bengal Home, the residence of Sir Chinubhai Baronet, and New Gujarati Shala where Gandhiji used to interact with small children, and Bhaishankar ni Haveli.
The yatra covered the residences of freedom fighters such as Umakant Kadia, Krupashankar Pandit, Surendra Medh, and Veni Shankar. The participants also saw Narhari Parikh's Haveli in Khadia where Gandhiji's ashes was kept before the final yatra was taken out.
