Independence Day celebrations: Chandigarh, Mohali turned into fortress

Special checkpoints were set up by the UT and Mohali police at all entry and exit points of the city Sunday and checks were conducted in sensitive areas.

Chandigarh and Mohali were turned into fortresses on the eve of Independence Day celebrations Monday. Special nakas (checkpoints) were set up by the UT police as well as the Mohali police at all entry and exit points of the city Sunday and checks were conducted in sensitive areas.

More than 5,000 police personnel will keep a vigil in Chandigarh Monday and all the routes leading towards prime destinations have been diverted. People have also been advised by the police to avoid some routes Monday morning.

Mohali police also deputed 800 police personnel in the city to keep a strict watch on anti-social elements. As many as 6 Superintendent of Police, 10 DSPs, 30 Inspectors, 85 ASIs and 700 other police personnel will keep a tight vigil in the city. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal will unfurl the national flag and also honour the people for the meritorious services. The function will be held at Government College in Phase VI.
