Ministers discuss environmental damage caused by olive presses

AMMAN — Agriculture Minister Rida Khawaldeh and Environment Minister Yaseen Khayyat on Sunday discussed proposed solutions to the environmental side effects of olive presses, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The two ministers discussed the possibility of using new technology to treat “zibar” olive-mill wastewater (OMW), which is a problem for 132 olive presses across the Kingdom.
Khayyat said that some companies would be asked to test new technology in pilot projects at one of the presses. OMW contains phenol, which is a toxic chemical compound that affects the environment, people and animals.
