The Internationalist Democratic Platform (IDP) and Sant Singh Sukha Singh School management jointly organised a seminar on the need of friendship between India and Pakistan here today.

Speaking on the occasion, former jathedar Giani Kewal Singh said people need peace and not nuclear weapons. He said if the friendship between the two nations was strengthened, both the countries could reduce their defence expenditure and spend more on the welfare of people. He said the partition of India was a wrong political decision and both the nations and their people were still paying the price for the misadventure.

Secretary of the IDP, Karnail Singh Jakhepal, said if the expenditure on defence was calculated, every family of five members got Rs 6,533 per month. “The amount is huge and if spent on the welfare of people, it can make a huge difference,” said Jakhepal.

Another speaker, Darshan Singh, said wars had proven disastrous for people. “Apart from the loss of lives and huge expenditure, these result in long-term enmities for which the future generations have to pay the price,” he said. The other speakers included thinker Hamir Singh, director of Sant Singh Sukha Singh School, Jagdish Singh, Sukhwant Singh from Sikh Missionary College, Dr Kuldeep Kaur, Prabhjit Singh, Rajpal Singh, former Sarpanch Jagdish Singh and Pritam Singh. — TNS
