TEAMS FROM the JJ Marg police station have spread across places of worship in the city where free food is provided to track down a Byculla jail inmate, who on Saturday fled from JJ hospital along with her three year-old-son. The lady constables guarding Zubeida Khatun, who had come to the hospital since her son was suffering from chicken-pox, were suspended on Saturday after Khatun managed to give them the slip.

Khatun had been arrested by Govandi police in 2014 on charges of kidnapping. A senior officer linked to the probe said that the woman before being arrested used to live on the road with her son.

“She has no immediate family members. She would normally be around places of worship so that she could eat the charity food that was provided free of cost. We suspect now too she would go to these places and have our men stationed several places including Govandi, Mahim and Wadala,” said the officer.

The officer added that their men have also been standing guard at railway stations to ensure that she does not leave the city. “We believe that she is still in the city. We should be able to track her down soon,” said the officer. He added that the CCTV footage they have shows her leaving from gate no 11 at the JJ hospital. “We have also been in touch with some people with whom she was on good terms and may approach for help,” added the officer.

The three constables had reportedly accompanied Zubeida to the hospital after her three-year-old daughter, who stayed with the accused in the jail, complained of illness. “Khatun managed to escape and fled from the hospital. A case was registered at JJ hospital and our investigation is under way,” said zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police Manoj Sharma.

Festive offer

Soon after her escape an FIR was registered at the JJ Marg police station under section 224 of the Indian Penal Code for resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension.
