If anyone comes across a case of drug abuse or female foeticide, one need not hesitate in informing Director General of Police (DGP) KP Singh.

The DGP gave the assurance at a seminar on “Role of Police in Panchayati Raj” in Fatehabad today and shared his mobile phone number (94160-04464). “Feel free to drop a message on my phone if you come across any case of female foeticide and drug abuse. Don’t hesitate,” he told the gathering.

“The onus is not on the police alone”, as the DGP underlined the role of society in curbing evils. “The role of parents, teachers and neighbours is crucial in the upbringing of children. They should be alert to the possibility of children getting hooked on to drugs,” he said.

“Around 22 per cent of students in the state have once tasted drugs at some stage. Students living in hostels are more exposed to drug addiction, as 50 per cent of them are addicts,” Singh claimed at a convention of panchayati raj representatives in Hisar.

“The responsibility also rests with panchayati raj representatives. They need to launch social reform campaigns against drug abuse and female foeticide. Panchayat representatives must contact the police in case of social evils such as female foeticide or drug abuse. The police will take action on the basis of a message from you,” the DGP said, adding “panchayats have a vital role to play in building a crime-free society”.

Sarpanches Balbir Singh from Agroha, Shakti Singh from Bhagana and Rachna Devi from Kinala (all in Hisar district) assured the police chief of taking remedial steps to curb female foeticide and drug abuse in their villages. Sarpanch Rachna Devi said eradication of social evils would contribute to women’s empowerment.
