Sharks relying on Brazil to keep Rio Olympics water polo dream alive

Aaron Younger says he will struggle to watch. Rhys Howden might go to the game itself.

Either way, it won't matter where the Australian men's water polo team watches the match between Brazil and Hungary because the result is the only thing that matters.

The equation is simple.

If Brazil wins by two or more goals, Australia sneaks through to the quarter-finals. If they don't, the Olympics are over for the Sharks, who kept the dream alive with a 12-7 win over Greece at the Aquatic Stadium.

They could also sneak through if Japan beat Serbia, but that is considered highly unlikely.

Asked where he and his teammates would watch the Brazil-Hungary match, Younger laughed: "I probably won't watch to be honest. I don't think I could handle it. I'll wait for the phone to ring.

"We've played against the bronze medallist there from the world championships last year, we drew with Hungary, we almost beat Serbia and then we've lost the very first game [against Brazil] which was a lower ranked team. That was the one that could come back to bite us on the arse."

Brazil - who have been, surprisingly, the form team of the competition - take on Hungary at 9.50am AEST on Monday.

Having lost to Serbia 10-8, the Sharks needed to beat Greece to keep their finals chances alive.

They led 10-4 at halftime and ran out easy winners with Howden and John Cotterill each scoring three goals. Younger contributed two.

"I'm not sure where we will watch," Howden said. "We might come here [to the Aquatic Stadium] and watch or we might huddle around the TV in the Village and have some dinner while we're watching it. We'll all get round each other. Either way, we can be proud of ourselves."
