VARANASI: One person died of bullet injuries late Friday night when police used force to disperse a group of people who were protesting against seizure of a truck carrying cattle under Narahi police jurisdiction in Ballia district. The mob was led by BJP MLA Upendra Tiwari.
Ballia district magistrate Rakesh Kumar has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident.
SP Ballia Manoj Kumar Jha has suspended SO Narahi Rajesh Kumar Yadav.
IG Varanasi zone S K Bhagat said DIG Azamgarh would also probe into the matter.
On the complaint of deceased Vinod Kumar Rai's nephew Gopal, an FIR was lodged against district administration officials and police, while the BJP MLA and his more than 400 supporters were booked under sections 147, 148, 149, 341, 353, 307, 323, 504, 506 of IPC and 7CL Act. The DM also announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakhs for Vinod's family and forwarded the demands of the family to the state government.
According to reports, the Narahi police seized a truck laden with cattle on Thursday night near Mathia village of Tedhva area. On Friday morning, the BJP MLA and his supporters reached the Narahi police station and alleged that police were trying to implicate some farmers who were returning home after purchasing cows from a cattle fair on charges of cattle smuggling.
The DM said that SDM, ASP, circle officer and many senior officials were rushed to Narahi police station to convince Tiwari to call off the stir. However, Tiwari alleged that policemen had also misbehaved with women in the village and looted Rs 50,000 cash from the truck driver and continued the agitation.

It is alleged that Tiwari's supporters attacked the police station late Friday night when police used force to disperse them. The DM admitted that police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the mob. However, the DM and the SP denied that police opened fire on the demonstrators.
The injured demonstrators, including Vinod, were rushed to the district hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. His postmortem report said that he died of bullet injuries.
His body was handed over to his family on Saturday and his cremation was conducted amidst tight security.
The DM said that as a precaution, heavy police force has been deployed in Narahi and also in Ballia town. He said that chief revenue officer has been assigned to conduct the magisterial probe.
